Dear friends and visitors:
Welcome to our website and to the many faces of
Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. Children
have benefited from a Sacred Heart education for
over 200 years, the first school of the Sacred
Heart having been founded in Amiens, France by
Madeleine Sophie Barat in the year 1800. Since
that time, Sacred Heart education has been known
for academic rigor delivered with love and
gentleness in an atmosphere of faith, openness,
and respect.
Madeleine Sophie was a woman of her times with a
vision for the future that ultimately took her
education to every continent of the globe and
embraced children of all races and cultures. She
sought to prepare young women to take their
rightful places in the world in which they found
themselves, armed with strength of character,
intellectual curiosity, and a “lively faith.”
In 1923, the Society of the Sacred Heart opened
a school in northwest Washington, D.C. at 1719
Massachusetts Avenue. The school’s popularity
and subsequent growth made it necessary to
relocate in 1947 to its present location at
Stone Ridge in Bethesda, Maryland.
Today, over 700 children attend Stone Ridge.
They are encouraged and supported by a loving
and professional faculty who help them to grow,
like the child Jesus, in wisdom, age, and favor
before God and humanity. Stone Ridge is proud of
its alumnae and of their many contributions to
church and society.
I hope that the information and images you see
on our website will encourage you to learn more
about Stone Ridge. Please visit these pages,
visit our school, and become a part of our
community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Richard Barbieri
