| Harpist Liliana Smigen-Rothkopf x’03,
a student at the International Music School in
Limerick, Ireland, performed at Stone Ridge on
Wednesday, September 6. Liliana, whose stage
name is Lily Neill, explained the
relevance of the harp in Irish history and
culture to Noreen Murphy’s fourth graders and
Denise Murphy’s first graders, gathered in the
Large Parlor within Hamilton House. Lily’s
interest in the harp began at a very young age
when her Stone Ridge Third Grade teacher, Anne
McDonald, gave her a recording of a famous
harpist from Ireland. Recognizing her interest
in the instrument, Lily’s parents, Mr. Henry
Rothkopf and Ms. Sheilagh Smigen-Rothkopf,
encouraged her through harp lessons, which she
began at age eight. While a student at Stone
Ridge, Lily played the harp and piano in the
Parlor Concerts and played harp accompaniment
for a Lower School Annual Christmas Concert. Two
years ago, she recorded her first CD entitled,
“Without Words.” Lily just returned from a
six-month exchange program at the Sibelius
Academy in Helsinki, Finland and, in February
2007, she will be an Artist-in-Residence at the
Music Center at Strathmore. Lily’s sister is
Georgina Smigen-Rothkopf ’01. |

Alumnae Connect with NASA's Discovery
Mission
All Stone Ridge eyes are on the
STS-121 Discovery mission, with special interest
in the first spaceflight of Astronaut
Lisa Caputo Nowak, one of two women on
the seven-member crew and sister of Andrea
Caputo Rose ’83 and Marisa Caputo
Terrenzi ’86. "Aboard Discovery," according
to a media advisory released by the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration [NASA],
Mission Specialist Nowak is responsible for
operating "both the shuttle and station robotic
arms aboard to support station assembly tasks
and spacewalks." The mission is also evaluating
"new shuttle flight safety procedures, including
in-flight inspection and repair techniques."
With an unprecedented July 4 launch, the Space
Shuttle Discovery is due to leave the
International Space Station on Saturday, July
15. The Stone Ridge community extends support to
the Caputo and Nowak families as the entire
nation awaits the crew’s safe return to Earth on
Monday, July 17. View

of an article, by Tim Page, Frederica
Von Stade, With Verve and Vitality, in The
Washington Post on December 12,
2005 "Some great musicians are revered, others
are loved; the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade
is both. The capacity audience that greeted her
Vocal Arts Society-sponsored recital at the
Terrace Theater on Saturday night would happily
have listened to her for hours -- and then
cheered for more."
