The Très Bien Ball has its roots in two traditions that began soon after Reverend Mother Agnes Barry oversaw the school’s move from 1719 Massachusetts Avenue in northwest Washington, D.C to its current location in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1946, the Stone Ridge Father’s Club sponsored a graduation dance for the girls and their parents. Here, all enjoyed a wonderful evening in celebration of achievements and possibilities.

Three years later, the Alumnae Association held a supper dance with the aim of establishing a scholarship fund at Stone Ridge. The attendance at that first event held at the Sulgrave Club in November 1949 went beyond expectations. “The Scholarship” was born and the surplus was invested toward the goal of a self-sustaining Fund.

In 1953, these two events sponsored by the Father’s Club and the Alumnae Association merged, becoming the Très Bien Ball—a dinner dance attended by the Fourth Academic students and their parents, followed by a presentation of the girls to the Alumnae Association, with proceeds benefiting the Scholarship Fund. Today, this Fund, dedicated by the Alumnae Association in 1982 to the late and much-beloved Reverend Mother Agnes Barry, provides two four-year half scholarships to Stone Ridge students.

Fifty-three years later, the event continues to be a wonderful gathering of family and friends. That evening, the girls retire their kilts in favor of formal attire. The Alumnae Association welcomes each member of the Fourth Academic into the fold. Every guest that evening helps bring another deserving student to Stone Ridge.
