Onishi Music Room Dedication
On Friday, September 29, the Lower School Music Room was
dedicated the "Onishi Music Room" in honor of Mr. and
Mrs. Kosuke Onishi and their daughter, Reona Onishi
'17. Mr. Onishi made a $50,000 gift to Stone Ridge
School of the Sacred Heart to benefit the Music Department
across all school divisions. "The Onishi family’s gift will
allow generations of our students to enhance their musical
experience, and to use their skills for the joy of our
community and the glory of God," said Head of School Dr.
Richard Barbieri.
Mr. Onishi came to the United States as a student at the
Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut and went on to
earn his bachelor’s degree at the University of Chicago.
After working for the Mitsubishi Corporation, he received a
law degree and is now practicing in Washington, D.C. Before
settling in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Mr.
Onishi and his wife, Masami, had known of the Sacred Heart
Schools in Japan, located in Sapporo, Shibuya [International
School], Susono, Takarazuka, and Tokyo. They are well
pleased with the training their daughter is receiving at
Stone Ridge and wished to show their appreciation by
enriching the opportunities open to all of its students,
both now and in the future. Mr. Onishi's gift was inspired
by his daughter's interest in piano.
During the dedication ceremony on the Feast of the Guardian
Angel, the attendees listened to "Angels Watching Over Me,"
"Father I Adore You" and "The Happy Wanderer" sung by the
second graders and their classmate Reona Onishi '17. Two
fourth graders performed classical pieces on the new
Steinway & Sons grand piano, purchased through the
generosity of the Onishi family.
The Onishi Music Room stands as a tribute to Mr. Onishi's
benevolence and support of the performing arts at Stone
Ridge. Today and in the years to come, the family name will
be associated with the pursuit of music by everyone within
the Stone Ridge community, including students and faculty,
parents and grandparents, alumnae, and trustees.
